That wasn't marketing copy. Recent customers really have been receiving an upgraded mat before we told anyone else about it — we wanted the first reviews of these features to come from real practice sessions, not from a launch page.
Today, the upgrades are official. What Actually Makes a Putting Mat "the Best"?
"Best putting mat" is a big claim, and most brands make it without ever defining it. So before we show you what changed, here's the scorecard we hold ourselves to — the same five criteria we'd tell you to judge any putting mat against, including ours:
- True roll at a realistic speed. The Chiputt Mat rolls at 10 stimp, tested on a USGA Stimpmeter to match championship green conditions. A mat that rolls too fast or too slow trains a pace you'll never use on a real green — and pace is most of putting.
- Practice variety. A mat you can only do one drill on becomes home decor within a month. Variety is what keeps you coming back daily — and daily is where improvement lives.
- Durability. Felt-based mats crease, wear thin, and lose their roll within a year or two. Tour-grade turf should outlast the putter grip you're standing over it with.
- Family fit. A home putting green lives in your home. If your kids and your dog can't coexist with it — or better, join in — it ends up rolled up in a closet.
- Details done right. Backstops, distance markers, storage. Small frictions decide whether a practice tool gets used every day or abandoned by February.
Most mats on the market genuinely nail one or two of these. We've aimed at all five since day one — and the three upgrades below exist because our customers pushed us hardest on #2, #4, and #5, with real complaints and real requests. Here's what we built.
The Three New Upgrades
1. The Dual-Hole Chipping Mat
Every Chiputt Mat already came with a complimentary chipping mat — the only brand that includes one. The new Dual-Hole Chipping Mat turns that bonus accessory into the key that unlocks the whole system.
It's a full-size 2.5 ft chipping mat in the same width, material, and tour-grade turf as your putting mat — now with two additional holes built in, and turf inserts that hide them in seconds when you want a clean surface. It connects seamlessly to either side of the Chiputt putting mat:
- Behind the hole → a five-hole setup: three holes on the putting mat, two more behind them. Five targets, one green.
- In front → 2.5 feet of extra seamless true roll, with holes at both ends for two-way putting — on the 3×11 ft mat, that's a 13.5-foot putting surface.
- Fully separated → a dedicated chipping station: real turf under the ball, real holes to land on.
What does that mean in practice? Five targets turn boring reps into structured practice: ladder drills front-to-back across all five holes, scatter drills where you never putt at the same hole twice in a row, and call-your-shot games with anyone in the house. Two-way putting means you finish a putt, turn around, and hit the next one back the other way — no walking to reset, so you fit roughly twice the reps into the same ten minutes. And when you'd rather have a clean, classic green, the turf inserts drop into the two holes flush with the surface — you'd have to kneel down to spot them.
Same turf, same roll, zero seams that matter. And it's still included free with every mat.
2. Side Rails
The most relatable complaint in home putting: the miss that trickles off the edge of the mat and disappears under the sofa. You stop practicing and start crawling. It sounds trivial until you count how many practice sessions it has quietly ended early — ball-chasing is the tax on every putt you don't hit perfectly, which is exactly the putts you're there to work on.
The new side rails run along the edges of the putting surface and keep wayward putts on the mat — the ball stays with you, rep after rep. They snap directly into the turf (tip: seat one edge first, then press the rest in — don't force the open side), and they pull double duty as a second backstop when your layout calls for one.
It's a simple piece of the scorecard above — criterion #5, details done right — but it removes the single most common friction between you and a daily putting habit.
3. Anti-Slip Backstop Tape
This one started as a straight-up customer complaint, and it deserves an honest explanation.
Customers told us the handcrafted wooden backstop would creep backward as firm putts thumped into it — a few minutes of practice, then a nudge to slide it back into place. Annoying. The obvious fix would have been to lock the backstop into a fixed position on the mat.
We deliberately didn't do that — because on a Chiputt Mat, the backstop is supposed to move. Different configurations put it in different places: behind the main hole in a standard setup, behind the chipping mat in a five-hole game, repositioned again for two-way putting. A fixed backstop would have solved the sliding and killed the flexibility that makes the system worth owning.
So instead, every backstop now ships with anti-slip tape on its base. It grips wherever you place it — firm putts stay stopped — and it still lifts away instantly when your layout changes. The symptom is fixed; the flexibility survives. That's the trade-off we'll make every time.
4 Configurations, 7 Practice Modes
The real story of this upgrade isn't any single accessory — it's what they unlock together. The Dual-Hole Chipping Mat gives the system four distinct configurations: putting mat alone, chipping mat connected in front, connected behind the hole, or fully separated. Across those four layouts, you get seven genuinely different ways to practice:
1. Chipping. Separate the chipping mat and chip from real turf to real targets. It stays planted when you step on it — no sliding mid-swing — and landing chips on actual holes instead of a towel teaches carry distance the way the course does.
2. Full Strike. The dense 0.6-inch tour-grade turf takes a real, descending strike — sim-room hitting-mat feel and durability, in your living room. Wedge work doesn't need a separate purchase or a trip to the range.
3. Roll-Out. Place the chipping mat behind the hole and firm putts that run past have somewhere to go — perfect for dialing in the "roll it three feet past" pace that good putters train for. Instead of guessing how far your miss would have run, you can see it.
4. HORSE. Five holes turn practice into a game: call your putt, make your putt. The mode our customers' families ask for by name — and the sneaky one, because a nine-year-old calling "back-left hole, off the side rail" is doing pressure putting practice without knowing it.
5. Extension. Connect the chipping mat in front for 2.5 feet of extra true roll — your 11-footer becomes a 13.5-footer. Want longer still? Chiputt Extenders stack the same way.
6. Two-Way. With holes at both ends, you putt in both directions — double the reps without walking back to reset, and a built-in head-to-head format (we recommend 7-Up) when someone joins you.
7. Standing. Stand on the chipping mat with your feet level with the putting surface — not on the floor below it. Same height as the ball, the way you'd stand on a real green. It's a subtle one, but your eyes and your setup notice the difference on every read.
One mat, seven modes. That's criterion #2 — the variety that keeps a practice tool in daily use — answered more completely than any putting mat we know of. And since home practice only works if you actually do it, variety isn't a bonus feature. It's the feature.
