Ryan Fox's Putter Has an 8-Iron Shaft and 6.5° of Loft — Here's Why It Won The Open

Ryan Fox stood over a 12-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole of the 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale knowing exactly what it was worth. Make it, and he was a major champion. Miss it, and he was in a playoff with Cameron Young — or worse.

He made it. It was only the fifth birdie made at Birkdale's 18th hole all day.

What makes that putt worth studying isn't the drama. It's the instrument he made it with: a putter that no clubfitter in the world would have built for him from scratch, with a shaft pulled out of an 8-iron and more than double the loft of a normal flatstick. And it's the reason those two oddities exist — which turns out to be the single most useful putting lesson of the week for the rest of us.

He didn't win it with his driver

Fox, 39, closed with a 2-under 68 to finish 10 under, one clear of Young. Overnight leader Sam Burns shot 72 to finish solo third; Scottie Scheffler (67) and Tommy Fleetwood (68) tied for fourth. Fox became the second New Zealander to lift the claret jug, joining Sir Bob Charles, who won in 1963 — and the fourth Kiwi to win any major, after Charles, Michael Campbell and Dame Lydia Ko.

The headline number is on the greens. Across four days at Birkdale, Fox led the entire field in putting, gaining close to 10 strokes on the field with the flatstick — a week he closed out with that birdie on the last. In a major, over 72 holes, against the best players alive, that is an enormous margin — the kind of separation that decides championships before anyone reaches the 18th tee.

It nearly slipped anyway. Fox made a pair of bogeys on the back nine on Sunday, then answered with four birdies in his last six holes, finishing with the 12-footer. The day before, he'd shot a third-round 62 — matching the lowest round ever recorded in a major championship, on a par-70 golf course.

The putter no fitter would have built

Here is what Fox holed that putt with, per the published WITB breakdowns from Royal Birkdale:

  • Head: Ping Anser 2D — a classic blade shape, nothing exotic
  • Shaft: a 40-inch KBS C-Taper 130 Black PVD — an 8-iron shaft, not a putter shaft
  • Loft: 6.5 degrees, roughly double the 3 degrees most putters carry
  • Grip: 17-inch SuperStroke S 1.0P

The shaft came first, and the origin story is refreshingly unscientific. Fox wanted a heavier, more stable feel through the stroke. A few years ago, while playing in Europe, he had the stout C-Taper 8-iron shaft plugged into his putter to get it — and liked it enough to keep it. He has now won all three of his PGA Tour titles, and a major, with that club in the bag.

Put a 40-inch iron shaft in a putter and you get exactly what he was after: more mass, more resistance to twisting, a stroke that feels driven by the big muscles rather than flicked with the hands. It's unconventional. It is not, mechanically, crazy.

The 6.5 degrees of loft is the part that deserves a longer look — because that number isn't a preference. It's a correction.

Why 6.5 degrees: the forward-press problem

Fox uses a significant forward press: at address and through impact, his hands sit noticeably ahead of the ball. Plenty of good putters do — it's a common way to feel a stable, leading-edge-first strike and to keep the wrists quiet.

But a forward press has a mechanical consequence that has nothing to do with feel. Leaning the shaft toward the target de-lofts the putter face. The loft stamped on the sole is the static loft — what the club has sitting flat on a bench. What matters to the golf ball is the effective loft: the loft actually presented at impact, after your shaft lean, your ball position and your stroke have all had their say.

Press the hands forward several degrees, and several degrees of loft simply disappear. Start with a standard 3-degree putter and a pronounced press, and you can arrive at impact with almost no loft at all — or even a negative number, with the face effectively tilted downward.

That matters more than golfers expect, because a golf ball at rest on a green is not sitting on top of the surface. It settles slightly into the grass, in a shallow depression of its own making. A putter needs a small amount of effective loft to lift the ball out of that depression and set it rolling. Deliver too little, and you drive the ball down into the turf instead: it hops, skids and bounces before it ever begins to roll properly.

So Fox and his fitters had two options. Rebuild a major-winning stroke to suit a standard putter — or build a putter to suit the stroke. They built the putter. The extra static loft exists precisely so that once his forward press has taken its cut, what actually reaches the ball is a normal, ball-lifting amount of loft.

He didn't fix his forward press. He made it irrelevant.

What this costs the rest of us

Here's why this is the most transferable story of the week: the forward press is one of the most common moves in amateur putting, and almost nobody who uses one has ever had their putter's loft checked against it.

The result is a putt that starts badly. A ball driven downward hops before it settles. Every hop is a chance for the ball to come out of the impact fractionally offline, and the initial skid eats speed unpredictably. You can make a technically good stroke — face square, path fine, pace judged well — and still watch the ball wobble off its line in the first two feet.

Then you do the natural thing, which is the wrong thing: you assume you misread it, or that your stroke is off, and you start changing your aim or your motion to compensate for an equipment mismatch. That's how a 20-minute fitting problem turns into a two-year technique problem.

The tell is always in the first foot or two of the roll — which is precisely the part of the putt nobody watches, because on a real green everyone's eyes are already at the hole.

How to check your own start-of-roll at home

You don't need launch monitors or a fitting bay to find out whether this is happening to you. You need a consistent surface and somewhere to put your eyes.

  1. Get low and watch the first 12 inches, not the hole. Set up a putt, then physically crouch behind and to the side so your eyes are near ball height. Ignore the result completely. You're only watching what happens in the first foot.
  2. Look for hop, skid, then roll. A ball that's launched with sensible loft settles into forward rotation almost immediately. A ball that's been driven down gives you a visible little bounce, or a stretch of skidding where the ball is sliding rather than turning, before it takes up its roll.
  3. Change one variable at a time. Move the ball an inch forward in your stance — forward ball position adds effective loft back — and watch the first foot again. If the hop cleans up, your press was eating your loft, and you've found a free fix.
  4. Then check your hands. Have someone photograph you at address from face-on. If the grip end is pointing well ahead of the ball, you have a forward press, whether you knew it or not.

The one requirement is a surface that doesn't lie to you. On a carpet, or on a thin mat over an uneven floor, everything hops — you can't tell your fault from the floor's. That's the whole argument for practising this on a proper tour-grade surface: a consistent, true-rolling mat means any hop or skid you see is yours, which makes it fixable. What to copy — and what not to

Do not go and buy a 6.5-degree putter. That number is the answer to Ryan Fox's stroke, not yours, and putting somebody else's correction on your equipment just moves the error to the other side. If you have no forward press and you add that loft, you'll launch the ball into the air and get the same hop from the opposite direction.

Don't rush to copy the 8-iron shaft, either. It solved a feel problem Fox had — a want for weight and stability — and there are cheaper, more reversible ways to test whether you share that problem, starting with a heavier grip or a counterweight.

What is worth copying is the order of operations. Fox's team didn't start with a swing change; they measured what his stroke actually delivered and built equipment to match it. That sequence is available to any golfer for the price of a fitting, and it's the opposite of what most of us do — which is buy the putter a tour pro uses and then rebuild our stroke around it.

The other transferable piece is the humility in it. A forward press is often labelled a flaw to be coached out. Fox kept his, fitted around it, and led a major field by nearly 10 strokes on the greens. Some of what looks like a fault in your putting is really just a fault in your equipment's assumptions about you.

The week Birkdale gave up its records

For context on how the golf course was behaving: Fox's third-round 62 was the third 62 shot at Royal Birkdale that week. Lucas Herbert and Sam Burns had each posted one on Friday, about twenty minutes apart. There have now been eight rounds of 62 in major championship history — and half of them have come at Royal Birkdale, starting with Branden Grace in 2017.

Which makes Sunday's 18th hole all the more telling. On a course handing out record low rounds, only five players birdied the last. Fox's 12-footer was one of them.

The lesson isn't that one is right. It's that both men know exactly what their putter delivers at impact. Most golfers don't — and the first foot of your next putt will tell you which group you're in.
